Reflective Logs
Reflective logs are your personal record of each training session. Regular reflection helps accelerate your development as a driving instructor.
Why Keep Reflective Logs?
Reflective practice is a cornerstone of professional development. By regularly reflecting on your lessons, you:
- Identify patterns - Notice recurring challenges or successes
- Consolidate learning - Writing things down helps commit them to memory
- Track progress - Look back and see how far you've come
- Prepare for observations - Identify areas to focus on before your trainer visits
- Build evidence - Create a portfolio of your development journey
Quick Logs vs Full Logs
myPDI offers two ways to create logs:
Quick Log
A streamlined form for capturing the essentials when you're short on time:
- Learner and date
- Brief notes on lesson planning, risk management, and teaching
- Overall rating
Best for: Busy days when you want to capture something rather than nothing.
Full Log
A comprehensive reflection covering all aspects of your lesson:
- Detailed session summary
- What went well (your good points)
- What could improve (points to work on)
- Skills and topics covered
- Hours completed
Best for: When you have time to reflect properly, or after particularly significant lessons.

Save your log
Click Save to record your reflection.
Tips for Effective Reflection
Be Specific
Instead of "the lesson went well", write "the learner successfully completed three roundabouts with minimal verbal prompts".
Be Honest
These logs are for your development. Being honest about challenges helps you address them.
Include Context
Note factors that affected the lesson - weather, traffic conditions, learner's mood, etc.
Focus on Your Actions
While it's fine to note learner behaviour, focus mainly on what YOU did as the instructor.
Consider the Competencies
Think about the 17 DVSA competencies. Which ones were relevant to this lesson? How did you perform against them?
End your reflection with "Next time I will..." This turns reflection into action and gives you something specific to work on.
AI-Generated Summaries
myPDI can generate AI summaries of your reflective logs to help you:
- Identify key themes in your reflections
- Spot patterns across multiple logs
- Get a fresh perspective on your development
The more detailed your logs, the more useful the AI summaries will be.
Viewing Your Logs
Access all your logs from the Logs page:
- Filter by type - Show only self-reflections or only trainer observations
- Sort by date - Newest or oldest first
- View details - Click any log to see the full content
- Print - Generate a printable version of any log
Creating Logs from Lesson Plans
If you've scheduled a lesson using Lesson Plans, you can create a log directly from the completed lesson:
- Go to your Lesson Plans
- Find the completed lesson
- Click "Create Log" to start a reflection pre-filled with the lesson details
This saves time and ensures you don't forget to reflect on scheduled lessons.
Who Can See My Logs?
- Your reflective logs are visible to you and your connected trainer
- Trainer observations are created by your trainer and visible to both of you
Your trainer seeing your self-reflections helps them understand your perspective and tailor their observations to your development needs.
